The Importance of Spending Time Alone

Can you stand yourself? Really think about it. Can you stand being alone, listening to your thoughts without the television creating noise, or your favorite song blaring from the iPod dock speakers? What about giving into the temptation of texting your friends, checking Facebook or Twitter updates? Technology is awesome nowadays but every now and then we need to unplug ourselves and get back to the basics. Remember the stories that our grandparents and parents used to tell us about “back in the day, when times were slower.” We always thought to ourselves, “sounds like a boring life.”  But older generations actually have a valid point. Think about it. There has been so much research, books and articles written on finding happiness. Living a slower life and having the abilty to entertain ourselves, by ourselves is vital to our well-being.

The importance of setting aside time to relax alone is beneficial to decision making. Because now you are able to hear your inner voice, hopefully loud an clear. Also, people that are dependent types have the opportunity to develop independence. A necessary aspect of happiness is not to rely on others to make you happy, because let’s face it, people are running in and out of our lives all the time. Happiness is not given to you, it’s a choice. We choose to be happy or unhappy.

If your daily schedule is packed from sun up to sun down, consider taking 10 or 15 minutes to yourself in the bathroom. Drive your car without the radio on and keeping your hands off the cell phone and simply and be with your thoughts and the road. Focus on yourself for a change. A simpler life is beneficial. So give it a try! Maybe a month and pay attention to the positive opportunities that are presenting themselves. You are likely to experience a bliss beyond your imagination if you give it a try. Have you tried it already? Share it here.
